John Bowley was a
chorister at Worcester Cathedral and a Choral Scholar at King's College,
Cambridge where he read music. After graduating he moved to London to study at
the Royal College of Music where he enjoyed much success including winning the
Margot Hamilton Tenor prize. He is a popular choice with choral societies all
over the UK, and recent performances have included a series of the B Minor
Mass in Spain and the UK, the St Matthew Passion and The
Creation in the Royal Albert Hall, both conducted by Sir David Willcocks and
the Missa Solemnis in Canterbury Cathedral. His engagements have further
included the B Minor Mass with the Bournemouth Sinfonietta, Dies
Natalie in Truro Cathedral, Messiah with Simon Halsey and the
Northern Sinfonia, Messiah and the Mozart Requiem with the English
String Orchestra, Puccini Missa di Gloria in Hereford Cathedral and B
Minor Mass, Christmas Oratorio, St John Passion and
Messiah at St Martin-in-the-Fields with the Belmont Ensemble.
International engagements include Judas Maccabaeus in
Vilnius, Lithuania with Nicholas McGegan and Taverner The Apocalypse in
the Megaron in Athens. This Easter John has evangelised Bach's St John
and St Matthew Passions in Scotland, England, Wales and mainland Europe.
John Bowley's operatic work has included the title role in
Nicolas Jackson's opera The Reluctant Highwayman and Soldier in
Jane Mielniczek's Canned Goods both at Broomhill, the continually drunk
First Guest in Mussorgsky's Sorochintsi Fair, and
roles in Bizet's Carmen, Harvey's Passion and
Resurrection and Monteverdi's The Return of Ulysses.
He is the Advertising Tenor in the recently released
recording of Maxwell Davies' opera Resurrection on Collins Classics,
Tenor in the first recording of a new work Missa Celtica by John Cameron,
with New College Choir, Oxford and The English Chamber Orchestra, which has just
been released on the Warner Classics Erato label, and is also on a recording of
Liszt for the Corydon Singers newly released by Hyperion.
John is the featured artist in the new Mercedes-Benz M Class
adverts.
